Professor Philipsen featured in Provost report

gerry phillipsonOur very own Professor Gerry Philipsen was featured, along with 16 other UW Faculty members, in a provost report series on trends and issues facing higher education. Each educator told how they are “using innovative methods to engage students in the digital media,” as tools such as clickers and social media are becoming increasingly weaved into teaching methods.

“Student time is devoted exclusively to learning rather than transportation to and from campus,” Philipsen said of the benefits to taking online courses.

Philipsen teaches COM 202 and COM 484 as online classes and although admitting to be a bit of a “throwback,” he advises faculty “to develop the ways that facilitate the intensive engagement with text and not to feel they must use newish technologies, some of which distract from serious engagement with the text.”
