During her college years, you could find Alyssa Jensen (B.A., 2012) on the sideline of a UW basketball or football game as part of the UW Cheer team, or working on her double major in Communication and Sociology. Her commitment to the Cheer team (which was also present at volleyball and soccer games, pep rallies, and other community events), her sorority, and her schoolwork has transitioned into a dedication to her career at NuWest Group.
Jensen has been with NuWest group, a recruiting firm located in Bellevue, since she graduated in June 2012 – read about her position and how she got there:
How did you find this job?
“I stumbled across this career in the best way possible! We had a career night at my sorority when I was a senior and two members of NuWest Group came and spoke to us about their jobs. They were both alumni from my sorority and shared their experience of working at NuWest for over 15 years each. I was not familiar with recruiting at the time but was curious to learn more. Interestingly enough, I was the only person to follow up with them following their presentation. Shortly after, I had an informational meeting onsite with NuWest Group and then decided to interview for an entry-level role.”
What does a typical workday look like?
“I started as a recruiting coordinator where I was assisting recruiters source resumes, schedule internal interviews and ensure we had all the compliance items on file for our contractors (i.e. background checks, references, drug screens). A few months later I was promoted into a recruiter role! On a daily basis, I was searching for candidates that would fit the positions our clients were hiring for. This is where my communication skills really came into play as I was consistently talking with people about their careers and potential moves.
“My last move has been into a sales role! When I was a recruiter I was on the candidate side and now I’m on the client side. On a daily basis, I’m calling companies to see if they would be interested in our recruiting services. Each day is different which makes my job exciting. Some days I’m in the office working with recruiters on how to find the best talent. Other days I’m meeting with new clients, sharing information about our services.”
Do you have any tips on finding a job for those still in school?
“Yes, definitely! The number one tip I would give is to use your network. I was lucky enough to stumble upon NuWest Group from a connection I made in college. Your network has connections that you do not! Share with your friends, family and acquaintances that you are job searching and would love any referrals they have.”
What do you think is the single most important thing to do while in school to prepare for the real world?
“Developing a great work ethic! UW is a challenging school to attend because it is so large. You don’t have many professors who hold you accountable on a regular basis. If you miss class one day, it’s not that big of deal. In the real world though, it matters! Employers want to see that you are dedicated, hardworking and can hold yourself accountable to your goals.”
Where do you hope to be in five years?
“In five years I’m hoping to own a house, start a family and continue to be happy in my career!”
